A one-day workshop to practice the technique of leaf area measurement with Android mobile application Petiole was organized by the Department of Fruit and Viticulture of the Faculty of Fruit and Vegetables, Ecology and Plant Protection at Uman National University of Horticulture.
This is truly the scientific center of the modern agricultural education of Ukraine. Established in 1844, this University is one of the oldest universities in the country with solid experience of scientific research in horticulture.
Andrii Seleznov, CTO Petiole, represented the company at the workshop. Since effective leaf area measurement is an issue for researchers all around the world, this topic was central in the discussion. Andrii told about Petiole and our current solution of leaf area measurement using a mobile application. He also demonstrated practical benefits of using Petiole for leaf area estimation and gifted two measuring stands for the laboratories of this University.
Participants told about their experience of using other methods of leaf area measurement (grid paper, method of leaf cutting, ImageJ) in researches of fruits, berries and nuts and estimating this important parameter of plant’s health with Petiole. Together with students and Ph.D candidates they discussed other key challenges and technology needs facing the agriculture education and agscience in Ukraine. Particularly, great attention was paid for measuring different leaf dimensions with a smartphone (width, height), estimating the area of damaged leaves, chlorophyll content measurement using technologies affordable for low budget education institutions.
This workshop gave good feedback about implementation of agritech solutions into the agriculture science in Ukraine and discovered new areas to collaborate for mutual success of Uman National University of Horticulture and Petiole.
